Billboards

How Do You Like Our Billboards?

We want to get the word out that agriculture is vital to Yuma County and Yuma County plays a large role in feeding America. For several years we have thought it would be very informative to use billboards, but the cost of the production and leasing of a billboard was always too high for a small community agriculture group. By partnering with Arizona Western College, the Yuma Area Ag Council and AWC have been able to work together and help proclaim the values of agriculture. The funding was made possible by a grant awarded to AWC from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The final product represents the combined efforts of AWC's Public Relations and Marketing Department, the AWC College Publications Department, and the Yuma Area Ag Council. Michelle Scharff, AWC Director of Public Relations and Marketing and Peggy Flinders, AWC Marketing Specialist, were able to find various billboard locations and negotiate possible prices. Ike Erb, Creative Manager at AWC, is the artist and designer of the artwork. Ike understands the challenges associated with billboards, and the importance of sharing a message in a matter of seconds. He came up with a catchy, easy to read phrase that clearly demonstrates the importance of agriculture in Yuma – “Agriculture Grows Yuma”.

The billboard incorporates a wide variety of related agriculture items, included visibly within the lettering. The billboard clearly demonstrates an expanse of crops grown in the county including cotton, hay, cattle, citrus, produce, watermelon, and cantaloupe. There are also images of beakers and satellite systems demonstrating the importance of science and education in the agriculture field.

If you haven't seen the billboards yet, you will soon. The billboards are located on the I-8 Westbound (between Araby Road and Avenue 3E), and on I-8 Eastbound (East of the Bridge over the Colorado River), and on Highway 95 Southbound (East of the Fortuna Road Intersection). You can also catch a glance of the artwork on bumper stickers and T-shirts that the Yuma Area Ag Council is distributing.

The Yuma Area Ag Council is very proud to be able to provide this daily reminder of the importance of agriculture to Yuma County.
